Record lap hands Lorenzo pole

Jorge Lorenzo controlled his rivals to claim a first pole position of the season in front of his home fans at the Spanish MotoGP. The Movistar Yamaha rider, the dominant force in free practice, was never headed during the 15-minute Qualifying 2 shootout. Lorenzo used a three-stop strategy more familiar to rival Marc Marquez as he continually improved his pole time, culminating in a record lap of 1m 37.910s and a 0.390s advantage over Marquez. The #99 will now aim to use pole as a springboard for his first podium of the season on Sunday. Reigning champion Marquez, riding with a fractured little finger, had fallen in final practice - prompting him to decide against trying a three-stop run...
